What we do

Human factors have a crucial interplay with modern AI and NLP development, from the way data is obtained (e.g. in low-resource scenarios) to the need to understand and control models (e.g. through global explainability methods). AI technology also does not exist in a vacuum but must be validated together with the application experts and stakeholders it should serve.

Overview graphic of my research

In our group, we explore these questions from different perspectives, taking the lense of

  • machine learning: developing new AI technology, like in this ICML paper,
  • natural language processing: developing and evaluating technology while considering the complexity of human language, like in this EMNLP paper, and
  • human-computer interaction: working together with stakeholders to understand their needs and empower more people to safely build AI technology, like in this CHI paper.

We value in our group the different views these perspectives can bring on the same questions and how we can complement each other with different skills in these areas.

We are happy to be part of a thriving community of AI and NLP researchers, being part of the MaiNLP research lab (lead by Barbara Plank), the CIS at Munich University (LMU) and the Munich Center for Machine Learning.

PhD

There is a new call for MCML PhD positions. Successfull candidates will be matched with groups and PIs from the Munich Center for Machine Learning at LMU und TU Munich (including our group). Deadline is 20 November 2024. More information can be found here. If you have any questions regarding the process, feel free to reach out.

Bachelor / Master thesis

If you are a student of CIS at the LMU, then there are fixed deadlines for the thesis. Please check out the MaiNLP page for more details. If you would like to discuss a topic beforehand, feel free to reach out earlier. If you are a student of another study course at LMU or at TUM, please reach out directly.

Post-Doc

There are currently no open post-doc positions. However, there are interesting funding programs like the Walter Benjamin program by DFG or the Branco Weiss Fellowship that allow for independent research and where we might be able to support you in the application. Feel free to reach out with your cv and a description of your research goals.

Research Visit / Visiting Scholar

If you would like to visit us, feel free to reach out with a cv and a description of why you want to visit us.
